Dietitians tend to know what items are trending for the kitchen, fitness routines, and nutrition businesses, which is why I asked my colleagues to share their holiday wish lists. These RDs have been very, very good this year, spreading science-based nutrition wisdom, helping clients reach their goals, and inspiring others with their work, so let’s hope they get to unwrap their must-haves this holiday season.
Food Huggers are on my wish list. Fruits and vegetables are part of every meal at home, and often there’s partially cut produce just hanging out in our fridge. Food Huggers seem like a cool (and tidy) way to keep partially used produce in the fridge (and hopefully keep it fresher for longer!). — Kate Chury, RD
Call me crazy, but I really want another stainless-steel compost bucket for my countertop. It’s so easy to just toss veggie scraps and coffee grounds into it right away. Then, I empty it into the larger compost bin out in the backyard that I mix with soil and eventually use to fertilize plants. I’m not a pro, but it’s worked really well over the past year. It’s not obvious you’re storing garbage on your kitchen counter. There’s literally no stink, too. — Jennifer Bowers, PhD, RD
I have the T-fal Actifry and love it. They have a new product called the the Tefal Multicook & Grains*, which would speed up the process of meal prep, especially when making grain- or legume-based salads. — Kendall Lee, RD
* Editor’s note: The Tefal Multicook & Grains isn’t available for purchase in the United States.
Fabulous Fitness Fashion
A Manduka yoga mat! Self-care and physical activity are at the top of my list for 2018. I love this mat because it’s PVC-free and made from sustainable materials. — Meghan McMillin, MS, RDN, CSP, LDN, CLC
I’d love a new pair of shoes. My current shoes are for running and have been through the ringer over the last year. Over the last several months, I’ve been spending more time doing CrossFit, so I have my eye on some CrossFit Nanos! — Michelle Loy, MPH, MS, RDN
In my constant push for more vegetable eating in my house, I am asking for a veggie spiralizer so that we can whip up tasty voodle dishes in a flash. — Vicki Shanta Retelny, RDN, LDN
In an effort to expand my fermentation skills, I would like to begin baking whole grain yeast breads at home and mill my own flour to maximize freshness and flavor. So, the WonderMill Electric Grain Grinder is at the top of my wish list! — Hayden James, MA, RDN/LD
It’s a classic, but I don’t have one. I want a KitchenAid mixer so I can put it on auto and walk away from it. Efficiency in the kitchen is all about having the right tools and gadgets, right? — Kelli Shallal, MPH, RD, CPT, CLT
I think every RD should have an immersion blender! — Kelly Jones, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN
A macro lens for close-up food photos! My birthday is a week before Christmas, so my family is always scrambling to try and get me enough gifts. I was going to buy one for myself, but they offered to get one for me. Hopefully it can help me enhance my food photos in 2018! — Natalie Rizzo, MS, RD
I have asked for some of those rustic, handcrafted earthenware individual bowls that chefs have fallen so in love with recently. Can’t wait to see how they photograph for my blog! — Sharon Palmer, RDN
